Mary Mancil

May 29, 1934 — August 24, 2020

Mary Edna Mancil, age 86, a lifelong resident of Troy, Alabama, found eternal rest Monday, August 24, 2020, at home surrounded by her loved ones. A funeral service will be held Thursday, August 27, 2020, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Green Hills Funeral Home with Reverends Daniel Marler and Terry Marler officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, August 26, 2020, from 5 – 7 p.m. at Green Hills Funeral Home.

Mary was as sweet and deliciously tart as the peach cobbler she so famously made. She was selfless, always attentive to the needs of her family and her community, and fervently devoted as a wife and mother and faithful servant. She was the steadfast reasoning for all her family, bringing them together, loving them equally, and teaching them diligently how to spread their wings. Mary cherished traditions, reserving Sundays for an old-fashioned, “fresh-from-the-yard” fried chicken dinner, and the importance of hard work, always reminding her children to “not put off tomorrow what you can do today.” She was a meticulous homemaker, best known for keeping a spotless house and making sure everyone left their shoes by the door. Mary was a treasured, genuine spirit, and for so long, the wind that pushed her family forward. And now, as her wings are soaring and with every sweeping, gentle breeze felt, those who loved her most will be a reminded of her endless inspiration.

Mrs. Mancil is survived by her husband of 36 years, Jerry L. Mancil, Sr.; children, Mary Jane Catt, Willie Jackson McLendon, Gloria Faye Johnson (Mark), Donald Gerald McLendon, Ronald Earl McLendon, Oscar Paul McLendon, and Linda Sue McLendon (John Williams); step-son, Jerry L. Mancil, Jr.; grandson, Dallas Johnson; 25 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Wallace McEvy and Charlie Ming; sisters, Lois Langley, Hilda Sanders, Ruth Cooper, Linda Pate, Irene Wright, and Mary Ann Williams; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Peggy Lynn Donaldson; step-daughter, Sherry Lynn Oakes; grandchildren, Benjamin McLendon and Melissa Sue Walker; father and step-mother, Ben Ming and Alva Renfroe; mother, Mary Murdis Mincy; brothers, Joe Ming, Bennie Frank Ming, and James Ming; sister, Debbie Blankenship; sons-in-law, Larry Henderson and Clarence Catt; and daughter-in-law, Margaret McLendon.

The family wishes to extend many thanks to the staff of Compassus Hospice for their support and tender care, and, special thanks to John Williams and Mark Johnson for their dedicated assistance.
