John Thomas Goolsby, Jr.

October 22, 1946 — August 3, 2020

John Thomas Goolsby, Jr., age 73, of Ozark, Alabama, passed away Monday, August 3, 2020, following a brief illness. A funeral service will be held Friday, August 7, 2020, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Green Hills Funeral Home with Reverend Johnny Turvin officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be Cain Turvin, Bradley Moseley, Jason Moseley, Tim Byrd, and Noah Williams. His final resting place will be in the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Ozark.


Mr. Goolsby was a proud Army veteran, retiring after 15 years of service as a decorated marksman and sharpshooter. He and his family enjoyed life across the United States and abroad throughout his service, having spent time stationed in Germany, Fort Carson, Colorado, Fort Lee, Virginia, and most favorably close to his hometown, in Fort Rucker, Alabama. Following his retirement from the Army, Mr. Goolsby pursued his drafting certification from Wallace College and his counseling certification from the Florida Baptist College; operated in a variety of positions with the Wal-Mart Corporation; and was a spirited radio personality and dispatcher for the local Ozark station 93.7 WRJM. He was a valued member of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #94 and a fanatical Alabama sports fan.


Mr. Goolsby is survived by his wife of 47 years, Janetta Peters Goolsby; children, Jeannie Clark, Tabitha Williams (Ed), Ellen Turvin (Johnny), and Matthew Goolsby; grandchildren, Angel Clark, Harlie Williams, Noah Williams, McKenzie Williams, Cain Turvin, Lacie Goolsby, Shayana Goolsby, and Hasten Lisenby; sister, Elaine Moseley (Carl); mother-in-law, Betty “Gran” Peters; brothers-in-law, Aubrey Peters (Rhonda) and Corsey Peters (Janet); numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend, Jerome Jackson. He was preceded in death by his parents, John Thomas Goolsby, Sr. and Lithel Thomas Goolsby; sister, Sylvia Byrd; father-in-law, Toby Peters; and brother-in-law, Gene Cook.


The family wishes to extend many thanks to his nurse in his final hours at Dale Medical Center, Alecia Victor; the staffs of Ozark Health and Rehabilitation and Therapy Department; and rehabilitation nurse, Shaina Foster. In lieu of flowers, charitable contributions can be made in his honor to the Wounded Warrior Project (PO Box 758516 Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516).
