Janice Dicks

June 9, 1936 — October 14, 2021

Janice Culver Dicks, age 85, a longtime resident of Pine Level, Alabama, was called to eternal rest Thursday, October 14, 2021, following a brief illness. A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, October 19, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Pine Level Baptist Church with Dr. Mallone Chandler and Reverend Bob Dempsey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Tyler Dicks, Taylor Dicks, Anthony Dicks, Jr., Ethan Dicks, Dalton Dicks, and Daniel Dicks, Jr. serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Dicks and Kenneth Noble. Green Hills Funeral Home directing. Visitation will be Tuesday, one hour prior to the service at the church.

Mama, Mema, Aunt Janice, however you may have loved her, was known to carry a recipe or two through her time, and even better known to whip-up something delicious right from the pages of her batter-splattered concoction journals. Her decadent creations were delicious and highly sought servings at every dinner-on-the-grounds, but her best recipe brewed right in her heart and yielded the warmest presence of love, friendship, and compassion in her every exchange.

Her knack for nurturing was inherent as she was the baby of her large family and often the subject of a little extra doting. Janice made good of her childhood attention and extended those values of help, hospitality, and community into her own home. She crafted an open-doors exchange at the “big white house,” or better known by locals as the “old Terry house,” where neighbors could gather to feast and laugh and celebrate together.

Janice was a dutiful servant in her church, Pine Level Baptist, where she devoted countless hours to developing meaningful ministries of community outreach and faithfully marched forward in her discipleship of the gospel. She found her best work right from the chancel singing His praises and rejoicing in the Lord, always. She penned, beautifully, countless notes and jots of timeless inspirations that will long fulfill the questions of troubled hearts and minds with confident wisdom.

Hers is a simple recipe, delightful and sweet—one part pure love, one part unwavering kindness, and two parts faithfulness all blended together and served with a smile. And, if you find a little chocolate to serve on the top, well, that’s even better.

Ms. Dicks is survived by her children Lonnie Dicks, Danny Dicks (Lisa), Cindy Anderson, Millie Maddox (Jeff), Paul Dicks (Judy), and Mark Dicks (Cindy); 19 grandchildren; numerous great and great-great-grandchildren; and special nieces and nephew, Toni Smith, Wanda Cook, and Virgil Culver. She was preceded in death by her grandsons, Nathan Tidwell and Justin Maddox; great-grandson, Cade Hood; parents, Alonzo and Ruth Lamb Culver; brothers, Mike Culver, Tom Culver, Art Culver, and Bob Culver; and sisters, Mary Crews and Nancy McNeil.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in her honor to the Pine Level Baptist Church Cemetery Fund (PO Box 5, Pine Level, AL 36065). Friends and family can sign the guestbook online at www.greenhillsfuneralhome.net. The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Dicks family.
