Bettie Lee King, age 94, of Troy, Alabama, passed away Friday, July 2, 2021. A funeral service will be held Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at 11 a.m. in the chapel of Green Hills Funeral Home with Reverends Wayne Locklar and Clifford Matthews officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hills Memorial Cemetery with Andrew Canant, Kenny King, Mike Kreis, Billy Powell, Greg Whitaker, and Tommy Spivey serving as pallbearers. Bettie relocated to Pike County as a young girl with her family. She attended Troy Schools and graduated from Troy High School Class of 1946. She snagged her first job at Elmore’s Dime Store where she unveiled her innate gift for stellar customer service. She advanced her skillset finding a position with South Central Bell as an operator and watched the evolution of telephonic communication unfold right at her fingertips. New technology sent her to work in Montgomery operating a novel dial system. When commuting became tiresome, Bettie secured a position at Edge Memorial Hospital in Troy (now recognized as Troy Regional Medical Center) where she was the friendly voice and expert PBX operator for 46 years. Bettie was a dutiful servant to the Lord long worshiping with First Baptist Church of Troy and Good Hope Baptist Church and often singing His praises along with the Gaither Vocal Band and Dino. She cherished the opportunities for travel, some of her memorable trips to include adventures to the Gospel Festival in Kentucky, the World Fair, a Western excursion with friends, and a cruise to ring in a special occasion celebration.
Mrs. King is survived by her daughter, Ann Canant (Bill); and grandson, Andrew Canant. She was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Jack King; grandson, John Canant; and parents, John and Lena Lee.
