Amelia Sherrill

June 6, 1940 — September 27, 2021

Amelia Brockman McKinnon Sherrill, born June 6, 1940, passed away peacefully after a day with her boys on September 27, 2021. Mimi was born to Hugh Thornton McKinnon Jr. and Ann Jernigan McKinnon in Troy, Pike County, Alabama. Mimi is perhaps more honored to have been born and raised in Troy than any other person, ever!  Heaven is brighter, kinder, and more graceful with her presence. Mimi was beyond proud of her daddy, Doc McKinnon, the town dentist, and spoke of him often. She attended Troy High School where she was the lead drum majorette, Mary Baldwin College, and the University of Alabama where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority. While at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia, she was introduced to Charlie Sherrill at a Washington and Lee University party by his sister and her dear friend, Alice Sherrill (Weller). Mimi and Charlie soon began their lives together through marriage, his stint in the U.S. Army in Oklahoma, his law school at the University of Florida, and their raising four rambunctious sons but no daughters.

Through the years, Mimi was recognized as a member of the Colonial Dames Society, a sustainer in Junior League, a member of the 6:15 Club, the founder and owner of Baskets & Flowers, an elder and lifelong Sunday school teacher at Trinity Presbyterian, a leader in the Trinity Presbyterian’s Cancer Support Group, and above all, the best first mate a sailboat captain could desire.  She remains famous for her pimiento cheese and salmon croquettes, competitive games of Parcheesi, afternoons with iced tea on the porch, her beautiful plein air artwork, and her significant contributions in the Pensacola community maintaining the beauty of the historic Dorr House grounds in the Seville Historic District.  She never spoke ill of others, she welcomed newcomers, she showered people with southern hospitality, and she genuinely adored her family – from Pensacola, Troy, Mobile, and beyond!

Mimi was a faithful Christian, a leader, an enthusiastic optimist, a devoted wife, wonderful mother, outstanding cook, and an excellent example of how to live life to its fullest.

Mimi was preceded in death by her parents, Hugh Thornton McKinnon Jr. and Ann Jernigan McKinnon, and her sister, Jane McKinnon Stephens. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Charles Carroll Sherrill Sr.; her four sons, Charles Carroll Sherrill Jr. (Sue-Sue), Philip McKinnon Sherrill, Fred Jernigan Sherrill (Heidi), and Richard Norton Sherrill (Lisee); 11 grandchildren, Charles Carroll Sherrill III (Mallory), Amelia Martin Sherrill, Hugh McKinnon Sherrill, Eleanor Louise Harris, Dobbin McKinnon Sherrill, Walker Ketcham Sherrill, Brooks Brockman Sherrill, Mary Mitchell Sherrill, George Gordon Sherrill, Luke Thornton Sherrill and Richard McKinnon Sherrill; 4 great-grandchildren, Jackson Thomas Sherrill, Katherine McKinnon Sherrill, William Theodore Sherrill and Jane Coe Sherrill; special sister-in-law, Alice Sherrill Weller; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.  The Sherrill family extends its special appreciation and gratitude to Leslie Merrill, who was a faithful friend and caregiver to Mimi for several years.

A memorial service of her joyful life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at St. Marks Episcopal Church, Troy, Ala.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in loving memory of Mimi Sherrill to Trinity Presbyterian Church for the Congregational Care Ministry, Pensacola, FL  (info@trinitypcola.org).
