Virginia Clower

June 29, 1926 — June 12, 2011

Virginia Johnston Clower, age 84, was born in Brundidge, Alabama and died at her home in Troy on June 12, 2011, following an extended illness.  She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, James Gibson Clower, her parents Royce Eugene Johnston and Carrie Senn Johnston, brother William A. (Bill) Johnston, and sisters Regina J. Britton and Koleta J. McCarthy.
She is survived by her three children, Connie Clower Whiddon of Spanish Fort, AL, James (Jim) Gibson Clower, Jr. of Troy, and Shannon Clower Selvius (Douglas) of Parker, CO; granddaughter Stephanie Renee  Selvius, grandson Ryan Keith  Selvius and brother Allen LeVonn Johnston (Mary Vann) of Opp, AL.
Mrs. Clower graduated as valedictorian from Pike County High School and earned her degree in education from the University of Alabama.  She taught business classes at Troy High School and worked as an administrative assistant and Title I Coordinator for the Troy City Schools.
She was an avid gardener and served in all capacities of the Floribunda Garden Club, where she was a member for more than 40 years.  She was a Girl Scout leader, PTA president, president of Friends of the Library, accomplished cook and homemaker.  She read constantly, and recorded a journal of events from her youth for her survivors.
Virginia was an active member of Troy First Baptist Church for 56 years, teaching 4th grade boys Sunday School for 25 years and serving as a faithful member of the Builders Sunday School Class.  She was a strong Christian who looked forward to being with her Lord and Savior in death because she was “just going home.”
Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at Green Hills Funeral Home.  A Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at 10:00 am with Capt. Mark Johnston and Dr. Luke Lane officiating.  Burial will follow in Green Hills Memorial Park Cemetery with Green Hills Funeral Home directing.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to:  Troy Public Library’s Building Fund , 300 North Three Notch St., Troy, AL 36081 or to United Way, Central Alabama, Attn:  Tornado Relief, PO Box 320189, Birmingham, AL 35232-0189.
