Virgil Duane Cox

October 26, 1939 — November 27, 2023

Troy

I am heartbroken and dismayed to announce the death of our beloved father, PawPaw, and friend to many, Virgil Duane Cox. He passed away Monday, November 27th, 2023, at Baptist South. He was 84 years old and was surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be held graveside at Green Hills Veteran’s Cemetery on Monday, December 4th at 2:00 pm.

He was a resident of Troy, Alabama since October 2021 to be closer to his grandkids whom he cherished and enjoyed dearly. Duane moved to Troy from Chickasha, Oklahoma which he has always referred to as his lifelong home and spent a large portion of his life in Panama City, Florida. He was an unbelievable man and an even better father who gave selflessly of himself to make sure his kids were taken care of and made sure we were brought up right. He always found time to include himself in whatever we were involved in.

Duane was a proud member of the United States Air Force and an even prouder patriot, sharing this passion with all those who loved him. During his time in the service, Duane traveled to Thule, Greenland and Mildenhall, UK sharing his adventures with family; these adventures were frequently and fondly remembered in his stories.

He enjoyed tinkering and fixing up his place as he was rather persnickety and liked things his way.  His hobbies were working on his truck, family, and football. He had a sense of humorresulting in his loved ones coining the erm “Duane-isms” for all his sayings; he could have written a book.

He was preceded in death by his son, Tracey Shawn Cox and his parents, Virgil Chamness Cox and Ella Sullivan Cox.

Loving survivors include his sons, Michael (Stephanie) Cox, Casey (Megan) Cox, and daughter Pamela (Raymond) Cox-Crosby, grandson, Christian Crosby and granddaughter, Lauren (Justin) Davidson and soon to-be great grandson.

He will be greatly missed and always loved as his memory continues in the hearts of those who loved and knew him.

The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Cox family.
