Troy

Vera Mae Savana Gant, beloved mother and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Sunday, June 15, 2025. Born in Louisiana, Mrs. Gant met Sterling Gant at the age of 15. He was a few years older and went off to fight in World War II. She met him in Rhode Island as he returned home, and they were married in 1945. They lived in several different places and made their home in Webb City, Missouri, where they raised their family. The Gants were active in their community where he served as Mayor, and she served as municipal judge until their retirement. Upon retiring, they moved to Montgomery, Alabama, in 2002 to be closer to their family. She was a self-trained court stenographer and worked for over 40 years. Vera Mae enjoyed teaching stenography and even did some free lance work for about 10 years. She went back to school after she retired and received an associate’s degree. Vera Mae loved playing the piano, singing, and dancing. She was a devout Catholic and was a member of St. Martin of Tours Church in Troy.

Loving survivors include her daughter, Sydney Debray; grandchildren, Mike Simpson (Jeanne), Greg Crutcher (Amy), Jim Debray (Sherry), Cissy Agboatwala (Sohail), Chris Davisson (Shonda), Neal Davisson; 11 great grandchildren; 7 great great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Walter Gant; as well as extended family, nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gant was preceded in death by her loving husband of 74 years, Sterling Gant Jr.; daughter, Judith Ann Davisson; son-in-law, Dick Debray; her parents; and 2 sisters.

A Funeral Mass will be announced in a few days. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Compassus Hospice for the loving care and compassion received.
