Shirley Jean Corley Chapman

On September 12, 2026, Shirley Jean Chapman, 89, of Brundidge, Alabama, transitioned to the next phase of her spiritual development because of an extended illness with complications. Shirley was born and raised in Central Louisiana, near the town of Glenmora. Shirley’s long and fruitful life was enriched by her four children—Ronnie (Cristina), Brenda, Terri Storter (Jamie), and Robert—and by the experiences of living and learning in various places, including foreign countries, during her first marriage to Roy Davenport, a member of the USAF. She later acquired an expanded family when she married Richard Chapman and added three more sons, Brent, Rick, and Todd.

Shirley is survived by her husband Richard, the seven children, and two of her siblings, Opal and Elizabeth. She was preceded in death by her parents, James Claiborn Corley and Sallie Villulia (Bailey) Corley, and siblings, Marie Aline, Daniel Bradley, Joydee, Emma Rae, Jerry W., and her twin William Eugene; as well as a grandson, Rustyn. Shirley is also survived by adult grandchildren Johnathan, Jason, Ashley, Shana, Nick, Selena, Kayse, Kearstyn. and Randyn; and an even larger number of great-grandchildren, all of whom she loved dearly.

A special mention is made of a close group of friends who were fondly referred to as the "Granny Group," a number of traveling senior ladies who consisted of Shirley, Marie Taunton, Clara Godwin, Ruthie Kress, Jean Arrant and Marti Hooten. Not much was ruled out, whether it was the French Quarter of New Orleans or in the gondola of a hot air balloon at the New Mexico balloon festival. Also included are two close friends who are rarely mentioned, two rescued canines of questionable ancestry who have spent long visits sharing a recliner with Shirley during her last days.

A memorial service in Brundidge will be announced soon. The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Chapman family.
