Sara Elizabeth McLendon Hatfield, 84, passed away peacefully at home on October 5, 2026, in Banks, Alabama. She was born on October 26, 1941, to Howard McLendon and Lillie Mae McLendon. Funeral services will be at 2:00pm on Friday, October 9, 2026, at Green Hills Funeral Home with visitation one hour prior to the service. Rev. Averyt Walker officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery in Banks with Kyle Hatfield, Brayden Brown, Ryan Hatfield, Riley Benvenutti, Chance Killingsworth, and Ayden Brown serving as pallbearers.
Sara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, teacher, and friend. She was married to her husband, Bobby Hatfield for 65 years. Her greatest joy and pride was her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She treasured every moment spent with them and embraced her role as “Nana” with all her heart.
Sara taught in Pike County for 28 years and cared deeply for her students long after they left her classroom. She enjoyed working at the voting polls in her district, where she reconnected with friends and former students, and heard about their accomplishments.
Sara had many interests and talents that brought her great joy. She was a member of the Cotton Rose Quilting Guild in Troy, Alabama, where she enjoyed the fellowship and creativity of quilting. She also had a deep love for family history and genealogy. She spent countless hours researching her family’s heritage and carefully compiled several genealogy books so that future generations could know and remember where they came from.

Music was another important part of Sara’s life. She loved music and generously shared her talent as a pianist, often filling in as pianist at Banks Baptist Church.
Sara found simple pleasures in nature and at home. She loved watching hummingbirds and always had multiple feeders around her home to welcome them. She also enjoyed planting and tending her garden and growing beautiful flowers. These were quiet joys that brought her happiness and reflected her nurturing spirit.
Sara was preceded in death by her parents, Howard McLendon and Lillie Mae McLendon; her infant son, Bobby Joe Hatfield; and her grandson, Weston Brown.
She leaves behind her husband, Bobby Hatfield; her children, Mark Hatfield (Teri), Mike Hatfield (Dawn Marie), and Michell Godsave (Shannon); her grandchildren, Kyle Hatfield, Madison Benvenutti (Riley), Ryan Hatfield, Brayden Brown (Kameron), and Raegan Killingsworth (Chance); her great-grandchildren, Ayden Brown and Sara Benvenutti; as well as her bonus granddaughters, Desiree and Lillian Crawford.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of DaySprings Hospice, Dr. Boone and Pike Internal Medicine and to her friend and caretaker, Cindy Godsave for their love and kindness.
Sara will be remembered for her gentle spirit, love of family, devotion to her students and the lasting legacy she created through the lives she touched and the family history she preserved. The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Hatfield family.
