Pucha Yuk Currey passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, surrounded by her family. She was 82 years old and spent her life caring deeply for the people she loved. The Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 6:00 PM at Green Hills Funeral Home. Visitation with family and friends will begin one hour prior to the service at 5:00 PM. In honor of Pucha, the family asks guests to wear bright and cheerful colors.
Pucha was born in South Korea and faced hardship early in life after losing both of her parents at a young age. As the oldest, she quietly took on the responsibility of helping raise her siblings, never complaining and always with grace. She sacrificed without hesitation and still found joy in making sure the people she loved were cared for.
While working at Camp Carroll in South Korea, Pucha met Donald Gene Currey. Life together was not always easy, but despite many military moves and hardships, they were loving and loyal until the end. After coming to the United States in 1979, Pucha continued working in dining services on military bases, including Schofield Barracks in Hawaii, Fort Campbell in Kentucky, and Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, where she worked until retiring at age 78. She genuinely enjoyed greeting each military member with her warm smile and made sure they never left hungry. And frankly, no one did it better than her. After many years of serving the military, Pucha became a U.S. citizen in 2022 and was excited to finally have the chance to vote. She was the first in her family to build a life in the United States and her family is forever grateful for the life she made possible for us.
Pucha kept her circle small and liked it that way. The center of her world was her daughter, Onna, whom she loved with everything she had. She was deeply proud of the life her daughter built with Glenn and never missed a chance to brag about her grandchildren. Pucha, or “Meme” to her grandchildren, showed love the way she knew best - through food. And while a homemade meal was usually preferred, she could always make an exception for Popeye’s spicy fried chicken.
We are forever grateful for the life Pucha lived and the love she poured into those around her. Her hard work on earth is complete, and we rejoice that she now rests in perfect peace with our Heavenly Father.
Pucha is survived by her daughter, Onna Helms, and son-in-law, Glenn; grandchildren, Addison Kate Helms and Hudson Bryan Helms; siblings, Chong Tae Yuk (Tae Sun Son), Mison Pena (Elias), and Miyon Chung (Yi Kwan); and nieces and nephews, Chong Su Yuk, Sun Young Yuk, Yi Hwan Yuk, Jennifer Pena (Daniel), Mi La Chong, Che Hyun Chong, Chong Hyun Chong, Murdo Pena, Millie Pena, and Maddie Pena. She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Gene Currey; parents, Yong Man Yuk and Pal Sun No; and stepson, Bryan Currey.
The family wishes to extend many heartfelt thanks to the staff of Enhabit Hospice for their compassionate guidance and care, and an abundance of love and appreciation to Pucha’s dedicated caregivers, Ruby Shipman, Bonnie Tillery, and Danielle Pennington.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in her honor to the Tennille Community Church or Kentucky Veterans Cemetery West. Friends and family can share memories and messages online at www.greenhillfuneralhome.net. The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home are honored to serve the Currey family.
