Johnnie Sue Andress, a devoted community member and cherished family matriarch, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2026, at the age of 86. She was born on April 21, 1939, and spent her life fostering connections and nurturing those around her, leaving a legacy filled with love and dedication.
A graduate of Elba High School, Johnnie furthered her education at Troy State University with a teaching degree, where her passion for learning laid a foundation for her future endeavors. She began her career teaching high school in Robertsdale, Alabama. She returned to Troy and taught data processing at the university for a few years, Where she met and married her husband, Bob May 26, 1962. Ultimately, she found her true calling in the banking industry, where she excelled as a customer service manager at Regions Bank. Her unwavering commitment to serving others and friendly outgoing nature endeared her to all who knew her.
Johnnie was not only dedicated to her career, but also to her family and community. A long-time member of Bush Memorial Baptist Church, she devoted more than 30 years to teaching Sunday School to her peer group, a testament to her faith and desire to serve others. Her influence extended beyond the church, as she was known to be a passionate supporter of college sports, particularly Auburn University, and could impressively talk football with anyone. She also enjoyed fishing, ocean cruises, raw oysters, and her sister Mary Ann’s pimento cheese sandwiches.
Throughout her life, Johnnie found great joy in her family. She is survived by her son, Robert Andress Jr. (Patty), who loved her deeply. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Haley Kunstmann (Max), John Andress (Ashley), Mallory Fazio (Jeff), Sydney Morris (Dave), Kyle Norton, and Drew Norton, each of whom carries a part of her warmth and love. Johnnie also delighted in her role as a great grandmother to Frankie Fazio, Vinny Fazio, Tommy Fazio, Lenny Fazio, Hazel Ruhnke, and Olivia Kunstmann, who will remember her as a source of joy and affection. She also shared a very special bond with her sister, Mary Ann Danford (Tom) and her two sons, Vic (Donna) Danford and Van (Donna) Danford.
Johnnie was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Andress, Sr., and her parents, John William and Minnie Mae Stephens.
As we gather to honor Johnnie’s remarkable life, we invite friends and family to join us for a visitation on Sunday, January 25, 2026, from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM with Rev. Dustin Coleman officiating. Both events will take place at Green Hills Funeral Home in Troy, Alabama.
Johnnie Sue Andress lived a life rich in love and service. In her passing, she leaves behind not only memories but also an enduring legacy of kindness, dedication, and familial love that will inspire all who knew her.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bush Memorial Baptist Church in memory of Johnnie. The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Andress family.
