Francisco Alvarez

Apr 2, 1934 — Aug 1, 2026

Troy

With hearts full of gratitude for a life well-lived, we honor Dr. Francisco José Alvárez O’Bourke, who passed away in Montgomery, AL, after a sudden and brief illness on Saturday, August 1, 2026.

Born in Cuba in 1934, he was trained as a physician and classical guitarist. He was gregarious, generous, hilariously funny, and vital to the very end. Widely traveled, with a tremendous facility for languages and boundless enthusiasm, he had a rare gift for friendship.

He finished his medical training in the U.S. at Tulane University, his internship in Long Beach, CA, and worked as a general practitioner in several California cities. He later developed a thriving plastic surgery practice. He took enormous pride in his work with patients, and still had energy for his family and hobbies ranging from photography, opera, boating, and of course, classical music.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Tracie, their son Sean, and his four children from a previous marriage, Luly, Joseph, Frank, and Laura, and his grandchildren, Alex, Bella, and Lucas Moya (children of Laura), as well as Nicolás, Joaquín, Elena, and Camila (children of Joe and Carola Alvarez).

He moved to Troy, Alabama in 2007 with Tracie and their young son, Sean. In Troy, they’ve enjoyed a vibrant community of neighbors, friends, and family, while staying in close contact with family and friends from California to Florida and around the world. He leaves behind a legacy of joy to all who knew and loved him.

The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Alvarez family.
