Deloris Perkins

August 25, 1939 — June 13, 2020

Woodie “Deloris” Flowers Perkins, age 80, formerly of Troy, Alabama, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 13, 2020, at Merry Wood Lodge in Elmore, Alabama. A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, June 16, 2020, at 11 a.m. in a graveside service with Reverend Bo Weed officiating.

Deloris was born August 25, 1939, in Inverness, Alabama, to Woodrow W. Flowers and Mildred L. Flowers. She was raised in Troy, Alabama, where she attended Troy Lab School and the Troy School System. She graduated from Troy High School in 1957 and later from Troy University in 1960 after completing her bachelor’s degree in elementary education. That same year, she married Charles E. Rowell and relocated to Georgia where she immersed herself in teaching with various schools in her area. She welcomed her son, Charles, in 1964.

In 1971, Deloris remarried Charles E. Perkins, who was a member of the Army. Together, through different assignments, they lived and explored worldwide calling home to Fort Rucker, Alabama; Frankfurt, Germany; Severn, Maryland; Honolulu, Hawaii; Springfield, Virginia; Smyrna, Georgia; and finally, finding their way back to Alabama. Deloris flourished wherever life carried her because she never met a stranger. Every location brought ample opportunities for Deloris to connect with people and share her passion for camaraderie and fellowship. Her friendships carried throughout the years, those close to home nourished through weekly Bible studies and sociable gatherings, and the more distant ones, celebrated annually with beach trips and precious reminiscing.

She was dedicated to teaching in the elementary programs for more than 20 years; an ardent reader; and an impassioned shopper, never missing an opportunity for a trip to Macy’s for a new pair of fabulous shoes. Deloris cherished time with her family, loving them all, but treasuring the special bond she shared with her grandchildren.

Deloris is survived by her husband of 49 years, Colonel Charles Perkins of Prattville, Alabama; son, Charles Rowell (Julie) of Prattville, Alabama; granddaughters, Ansley Elizabeth Rowell of Manhattan, California and Anna Elizabeth Rowell of Prattville, Alabama; sister, Donna McLeod (Donny) of Camden, Alabama; and nieces, Daphne Malone (William) and Ashley Turner (John). She was preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow and Mildred Flowers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her honor to the Merry Wood Lodge-Memory Care (280 Mt. Hebron Road Elmore, Alabama 36025-1526). Friends and family can sign the guestbook online at The staff of Green Hills Funeral Home is honored to serve the Perkins family.
